On March 21, 2023, the European Regional Meeting of the United States Pharmacopeial Convention will take place in Basel, Switzerland. The activities of the US Pharmacopeial Convention are determined by resolutions. Every year, the US Pharmacopoeia reports to Convention members, experts, volunteers, and stakeholders on the implementation of these resolutions. In 2020, 15 resolutions were approved at the Convention for the period 2020-2025.

Prior to the event, the US Pharmacopoeia organized a series of preliminary meetings to obtain feedback from members and observers of the Convention. The Ukrainian Scientific Pharmacopoeial Center for Quality of Medicines is a member of the United States Pharmacopeial Convention with voting rights since 2010. The meeting on February 16, 2023, was attended by its representatives ― Deputy Director for Science Dmytro Leontiev and Deputy Director for Quality Natalia Volovyk.

Alessandro Slama, General Manager and Senior Director EMEA at the US Pharmacopoeia, told participants about the structure, working principles, and efforts of the US Pharmacopoeia regarding effective communication with all stakeholders to identify and timely respond to problematic issues that affect achieving goals related to supporting public health as stated in the resolutions, and to develop new joint initiatives. Participants shared their thoughts on the most priority areas of work and proposed ways to achieve the set goals.

During the main event, the report of the US Pharmacopoeia on the progress in implementing the resolutions adopted in 2020 for the period 2020-2025 will be heard, based on the results of the 2022 financial year, and issues related to improving the work of the Convention and proposals for new resolutions for the next five-year cycle (2025-2030) will be discussed. Special attention will be paid to topics that were of most interest to participants in pre-meetings, namely: supply chain, biologics, COVID-19, nitrosamines&impurities, as well as prospective pharmacopeial harmonization.

In the future, the US Pharmacopeia plans to hold similar meetings approximately once a year, but not less than once every five years.
